Interview with Fesq

FESQ is a self-taught professional digital artist who specializes in 3D. He is an art director who deals with a variety of themes in his work. He has worked mostly for the music industry and with brands such as Nissan.
Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your background?
Hey! I'm FESQ, a 3D artist and art director based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In my professional career, I've worked on multiple types of projects ranging from illustrations and animations for the music industry to collaborations with car brands.
My background is quite diverse from only art in general. I was initially in college for Nanotechnology Engineering and later switched up to a Software Engineering degree before dropping out completely. That being said, before getting in contact with digital art online, I had zero art influence.
What influenced you to pursue a creative path? What have been your biggest challenges so far?
It all started when I found Beeple's work online. I remember I was fascinated with his work back in 2017-2018 and I instantly knew I needed to learn how to do that! After picking up Cinema 4D, I instantly fell in love with it and I've been using it until this day.
After about 2 years of working with 3D, mostly as a hobby at the time, I had the incredible opportunity to meet Beeple in person at an event down here in Brazil. Mike (Beeple) is one of the nicest human beings I've ever met. Not only is it a surreal experience to meet with the guy responsible for the kick-start of my interest in art, but that night was also just so life-changing in another aspect too.
Right before saying goodbye, he challenged me to do 1 year of "everydays". I couldn't say no, and I'm glad I didn't. The next 365 days of pure hard work, pumping art every day, and it completely changed the course of my career.
How and when did you get involved with NFTs and the crypto art space?
My first contact with NFTs was around June or July of 2020. At the time, the concept of artists selling artwork for crypto sounded straight like a scam. Living in Brazil, scams involving crypto are extremely common, and I was extremely skeptical.
It all changed though when I saw Aeforia, an artist I admire a lot, minting his Genesis piece "Nublado'' (if not mistaken) on SuperRare. I was certain that he wouldn't have jumped on it without proper research, so I knew I should also look into it a bit deeper, and that's what I did! That led me to get involved with the NFT space in late August, early September of 2020, which was by far the best decision I ever made in my life.
After almost 2 years in this space, I’ve had incredible opportunities because of NFTs, from being interviewed on National Television at prime time, to release an exclusive car with Nissan. Not only that, the NFT community is amazing, and I've made so many incredible new friends. It is honestly hard to believe.
What is your favorite NFT of all time, and by which artist?
It is really hard and almost impossible to choose a single NFT as my favourite but I will go with "Nublado" by Aeforia as it was the one that properly kick-started my interest in NFTs.
Do you have any advice for artists joining the digital art sphere or the NFT space?
I think that anyone joining the NFT space needs to have in mind the size of the opportunity it gives. It is basically the opportunity to be at the center of a technological revolution that should play out in the following decade.
That being said, anyone approaching this space unprepared or with not enough experience is doing it wrong. For any new artist, my main advice is to take your time with it and be patient with yourselves. Make sure to develop your brand and style first before even thinking about dropping NFTs.
Yes, sure, you can do everything at the same time and improvise along the way, but in my opinion, a career in this space is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for artists - approach it accordingly.
Can you talk a bit more about the piece you made for 0x Society?
The piece I worked on is called “Dissociative Environment'' in the MetaVRse exhibition for 0x Society. The overall exhibition is about the ways VR can impact the environment. My approach to this was to think about how the VR world can be so attractive to a point that makes people not care about the real world anymore, and thus, having it descending into chaos while they live a perfect life in the metaverse.
