The abstract art movement emerged in the early 1900’s with pioneers like Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint. Most notably the New York School of Abstract Expressionism gained prominence in the 1940’s in a Post-War America. Painters like Joan Mitchell, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock challenged the logic of representation by straying from traditional materials and processes. The deconstruction of the figurative and representational forms gave way to expression of subconscious landscapes characterised by emotive gestures, shape, form, color, and line. Breaking away from visual references in the physical world set forth an exploration of psychological, spiritual, and existential phenomenons which paved the way for movements like Minimalism, Conceptual art, and Performance art.
In the midst of the Cryptoart movement, painters rooted in the abstract tradition are utilising new mediums and technologies like video, generative processes, AI, and glitch art. A new school of abstraction is forming on the blockchain which captures the psychological landscape of our post-digital zeitgeist
